Sonoma Coast Communities for Forest Health and Wildfire Resilience
Project Overview
Basics
Sonoma Coast Communities for Forest Health and Wildfire Resilience
NCRP RFFC Technical Assistance (DOC)
Planning/Design
This project is part of a multi-phased planning effort to promote wildfire resiliency and forest health on the Sonoma Coast. The project will introduce large scale burning and grazing as priority treatments combined with manual and mechanical treatments on up to 300 acres of overly dense timber stands and excess fuel loading. A CalVTP has been completed for one project stage and technical assistance is needed to develop a broad scale VTP for the treatable landscape in the area rendering project readiness for proposed projects. Assistance is also needed for project development, grant writing support, mapping/GIS, and preparing these files for uploading to online grant applications.

Project Description Narrative (1,000 character limit)
The Coast Ridge Community Forest (CRCF) is collaborating with multiple partners to address land management issues that affect area forests and watersheds with a specific focus on reducing risk of catastrophic wildfire in the region. Prioritizing controlled burns and targeted grazing in a suite of fuel reduction tools including manual and mechanical thinning, will allow more acreage to be treated at a lower cost per acre.
Work is already underway to create a continuous network of strategically placed ridgeline shaded fuel breaks and access/evacuation routes across the region. A CalVTP has been completed for these projects where applicable. Forest Fire Prevention Exemptions were used outside the treatable landscape to expedite implementation while VTP development was in process. This project proposes developing a broad scale VTP for the next stage of projects in this proposal and those in the planning stage rendering project readiness for potential funding.

Project maps and data will be included in Permit Sonoma's Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP).
Working with multiple partners throughout the region, this project builds on the work of The Wildlands Conservancy, Save the Redwoods League, Sonoma Land Trust, Permit Sonoma, and CA State Parks. All planning efforts are in collaboration with CAL FIRE, HOAs, and local fire services. CRCF is partnering with Sonoma RCD on the CAL FIRE 2024-2025 Forest Health Grant that will include projects in the region.
CRCF provides resources and technical assistance to local and regional groups to support their vegetation management and wildfire resilience activities. We provide direct landowner support through ongoing forest stewardship workshops and keeping them informed of potential funding opportunities.
CRCF hires local contractors to design, develop, and implement its fuel reduction projects which supports the local economy.
All stakeholders are involved, directly or indirectly, in the work of (CRCF) and have provided project support, spoke at workshops and community meetings, attended field tours, and are active participants in the CRCF’s fire prevention planning. The CRCF communicates with stakeholders regularly through list serves, a quarterly newsletters, and targeted networking and outreach. CRCF provides a model for large-scale fire prevention planning among hundreds of landowners in diverse rural communities. Engagement with it stakeholders is an ongoing and a success path for engaging with stakeholders.
The proposed treatments, including RxFire fire, thinning and removal of declining Ponderosa pine that were planted outside their normal range, will reduce the risk of high severity wildfires. Cut logs will be made available to the community for firewood, fence posts, and other wood products. All revenue generated from these projects will be reinvested into the project for offsetting treatment costs and maintenance and or expansion of treatment areas. Biomass will be either left on site, chipped, burned, or transported to a mill and utilized for wood products.
The project enhances climate resiliency through improved forest health, improving ecosystem service delivery and decreasing the risk of catastrophic wildfire events.
