Hoopa Valley Public Utility District Conservation Project
Project Overview
Basics
Hoopa Valley Public Utility District Conservation Project
- Address Climate Change and Extreme Event Effects, Impacts and Vulnerabilities
- Ensure that Disadvantaged and Underrepresented Communities Benefit from Initiatives
- Improve Drinking Water Quality and Water Related Infrastructure to Protect Public Health
- Respect Local Autonomy and Local Knowledge in NCRP Planning and Implementation
NCRP IRWM Prop 84 2015 (DWR)
Completed
This project will replace approximately 854 residential and approximately 19 commercial inefficient water meters with new ones to conserve water. Once completed, this project will conserve approximately 70 acre-feet of water per year by detecting leaks and having District Staff repair the leak immediately; reduce lead concentrations in domestic supplies; allow the Hoopa Valley Public Utilities District to accurately monitor water use; and report accurate consumption amounts to consumers.

Project Description Narrative (1,000 character limit)
The project replaced old and inefficient district water meters that were a public health hazard and did not meet federal regulation safety requirements for lead safety rules. The District couldn't account for 50% of the water it produced and some of it if not much of was likely due to meters being old and under-recording the water consumption. Of all the community water system needs replacing meters was the most cost effective, practical, benefiting and most urgent drought intervention activity that HVPUD could implement. The project helped facilitate drought preparedness for a severely disadvantaged Tribal community.
