Technical Assistance - CAL FIRE Forest Health Pilot
Implementation
The Project will design forest health treatments on property owned by The Wildlands Conservancy. The 6,000 acre reserve is located in the East Fork Scott River watershed, a critically important salmonid spawning and rearing river. The treatment types include a shaded fuelbreak and ecological restoration, thinning drought impacted and overly dense conifer stands. Treatment activities include thinning, prescribed fire, pile burn, mechanical and hand treatment in a very high fire severity area by Cal Fire. Benefits will include enhanced forest health, decreased fire risk, increased carbon storage, and the creation of employment opportunities within our economically disadvantaged community.

General Information

Project Description Narrative (1,000 character limit)
The East Fork Scott River, a sub-watershed with high ecological significance, faces challenges with overly dense tree stands and heightened tree mortality due to prolonged drought impacts. The Wildlands Conservancy (TWC), owner of 6,094 acres, is seeking to execute comprehensive forest health and restoration efforts across its ownership. Preliminary assessments indicate that over 1,500 acres urgently require treatment. The requested technical assistance (TA) aims to craft a forest health implementation grant project for strategic and high priority portions of the ownership and plan for additional phases of future treatment. Project objectives include co-benefits such as employing local residents, fostering long-term carbon sequestration, enhancing ecological health, and improving water quality.

Project Types

Project Types

TA provides support for Cal Fire Forest Health grant development
The local forestry and stewardship economy and workforce will benefit from this project.
Forest Health improvement in a drought impacted and strategic forested watershed. Biomass chips will be transported to a biomass facility if the markets allow.
Shades fuel break priority is forest health, but significant co-benefits include modifying wildfire behavior for protection of nearby communities such as Callahan, CA.
The project will thin dense conifer stands resulting in potential for increased stream baseflows. Additionally, encroachment of conifers onto adjacent meadows and oak woodlands due to fire exclusion has compromised those habitat types.
Forest health treatments will create more resilient forest stands protecting existing carbon stocks from potential high intensity wildfire.
