Regenerative Forest Solutions (RFS) is working to support and scale ecological forest practices in Sonoma County through our Small-diameter Utilization Feasibility Study (FS). Our research will work to help lead to an increase in the utilization of small-diameter timber from hardwood and softwood species in our identified woodshed. The FS will: analyze feedstock quantity and quality; establish investment resources required; assess the benefits of small-diameter utilization for our communities and ecosystems; and, research potential frameworks to ensure that onsite ecology is less compromised when removing woody feedstock from a site.

General Information
Project Description Narrative (1,000 character limit)
Regenerative Forest Solutions (RFS) is a Sonoma County based non-profit organization providing organizational and leadership capacity and is working to research and write a feasibility study for small-diameter tree utilization in Sonoma County. The study will work with data and spatial technical advisors to meet the projects goals to: analyze feedstock quantity and quality; establish investment resources required; assess the benefits of small-diameter utilization for our communities and ecosystems; and, research potential frameworks to ensure that onsite ecology is less compromised during woody feedstock removal.
The Sonoma Mendocino Economic Development District and other local entities have identified the creation of more vibrant wood product industries in the region as a gap toward increasing viability of wider spread forest health practices. The FS will determine best next steps toward multiple economic and environmental goals.

Project Types
Project Types
We are requesting technical assistance to assess feedstock quality and quantity of small-diameter timber in the project area.
The FS will be a useful tool to local and regional agencies working to assess priority areas for thinning and forest health projects. In addition, it will identify potential strategies for utilization, economic and ecological, of the material.
Requested TA supports the project sponsor by providing technical capacity they need in order to apply for grants to fund project implementation.
Feedstock supply and potential utilization strategies outlined in the FS will better enable more viable wood products industries that will help offset the cost of forest thinning and improvement projects.
