NCRP Technical Assistance Round 3
Completed
The Mattole Restoration Council (MRC) has partnered with the CalFire Wood Products Workforce Development program to increase prescribed fire capacity in the Mattole watershed via S-212 chainsaw training and TREX prescribed burns. The MRC has secured project implementation funding for a 109-35 acre ecological prescribed burn in the Mattole River Watershed. Technical assistance is needed to complete the necessary environmental analysis and permitting for the project. The project is located near Honeydew, CA.

General Information

Project Description Narrative (1,000 character limit)
We are seeking technical assistance to complete environmental permitting and compliance work on a 35 acre burn unit on private land in Honeydew, CA. The unit is mixed grassland and oak woodland and a burn is necessary to conserve this rare habitat. The site has had restoration work done to restore the oak woodland and burning is needed to knock back encroaching Douglas fir, improve soil fertility, and reduce grassland thatch. The grasslands have native perennial bunchgrass communities that will benefit from fire in the fall. The oak woodland features mature white and black oaks that produce acorns. Mature Douglas fir were removed approximately 5 years ago and the area is being encroached by new small Doug fir that need to be controlled with fire to maintain the oak woodland. The owner is interested in land back and long-term acorn access for the Bear River Band Tribal members and those of Mattole and Sinkyone descent. Acorn quality is greatly improved with regular burning.
