NCRP Technical Assistance Round 3
Completed
This project will preserve forest health and water quality in the upper Jacoby Creek watershed through acquisition and management of 80 acres of forested land adjacent to the Cal Poly Humboldt Forest within the City of Arcata Jacoby Creek Conceptual Area Protection Plan (CAPP), an area that spans the source of Jacoby Creek to Humboldt Bay. Management of this forest will ensure healthy water quality in the headwaters and downstream, a robust forest ecosystem, habitat for native salmonids, and opportunities for research by the Cal Poly Humboldt community. Jacoby Creek Land Trust requests technical assistance for a property appraisal and timber inventory and valuation to support the purchase.

General Information

Project Description Narrative (1,000 character limit)
This project builds upon an existing conservation plan within the Jacoby Creek watershed; inclusion in the Jacoby Creek Conceptual Protection Plan means that this property is eligible for acquisition funding though the State Wildlife Conservation Board. A pre-proposal is in the works at this time; a final proposal cannot be submitted without a current appraisal and timber inventory. Once the appraisal, timber inventory, and pre-proposal are complete, JCLT can apply for funding to acquire, protect, and manage these forested lands. Holding this property as part of the CAPP will protect the water quality in Jacoby Creek, an important watershed for coho and chinook salmon as well as steelhead, cutthroat trout and pacific lamprey. The property’s location, adjacent to the Cal Poly Humboldt Forest, will allow for more efficient forest management practices; Jacoby Creek will work with partners Cal Poly Humboldt and City of Arcata to manage the forest on a landscape level.
