Fire Safe Occidental Fireshed Toolbox Project

  • Engage with Regional Partners to Inform High Quality Planning and Implementation
  • Ensure that Disadvantaged and Underrepresented Communities Benefit from Initiatives
  • Respect Local Autonomy and Local Knowledge in NCRP Planning and Implementation

NCRP RFFC Technical Assistance Round 1
Deferred/Unfunded
This project will: 1) identify the neighborhoods in an approximately 25 square mile area served by Fire Safe Occidental in greatest need of enhanced fire resiliency ; 2) use community-based forestry practices to develop a Toolbox for creating collective forest management or forest resiliency plans for neighborhood parcels (1-250 acres) with contiguous
boundaries; 3) implement the Toolbox in two of the identified neighborhoods; and 4) refine the Toolbox so that it can be
used in any similar setting.

General Information

Project Description Narrative (1,000 character limit)
The project will create maps to identify and prioritize fuel abatement targets in the approximately 25 square miles around Occidental in Sonoma County by augmenting existing maps to provide detailed maps, including fire topography, that can be used to prioritize and quantify the work needed for more fire resilient forests. In conjunction with mapping, a working group will define the legal and organizational challenges to developing forestry resilience plans in contiguous parcels in California. Safer West County, Fire Safe Occidental, Fire Safe Sonoma, legal, and community organizing experts will develop a template “Community Fireshed Toolbox” for development of neighborhood scale forest management plans or community forest resilience plans. Two neighborhoods will be selected to test the Toolbox by drafting potential community agreements. An evaluation and refinement of the Toolbox will prepare it for future use.
