Weaver Creek Water Conservation, Reliability, and Habitat Restoration Project

  • Conserve, Enhance and Restore Watersheds and Ecosystems that Support Biological Diversity
  • Ensure that Disadvantaged and Underrepresented Communities Benefit from Initiatives
  • Ensure Water Supply Reliability and Quality
  • Respect Local Autonomy and Local Knowledge in NCRP Planning and Implementation

NCRP IRWM Prop 50 R1 (SWRCB)
Completed
This project contains three elements: 1. Modification of a historic agricultural ditch that diverted 1cfs to irrigate a series of small pastures, yards, and orchards. 2. Rainwater catchment demonstration and water conservation workshops to capture stormwater, leaving water instream during the low flow period. 3. Installation of potable water tanks for the Weaverville Community Services District to replace a leaking redwood tank.

General Information

Project Description Narrative (1,000 character limit)
The largest of the three water saving projects was conversion of a flood irrigated pasture in the East Branch of East Weaver Creek watershed to a more efficient sprinkler irrigation system. The change returns flows to East Weaver Creek in the critical low flow summer period. The second project was a combined water conservation education effort and installation of rooftop rainwater tanks at at Trinity High School, a children’s garden at Weaverville Elementary School, a demo ag/ education program at Young Family Ranch, and a landscape demo project at Trinity Alps Performing Center. As part of the education, impacts of climate and surface water diversion and use of roof top rainwater were presented at 11 workshops/community events. The final project replaced a redwood water tank operated by the Weaverville CSD.

Project Types

Project Types

Replacing the Weaverville CSD leaking water storage tank with a new one with more capacity increased firefighting readiness.
Rooftop rainwater catchment and a new storage tank are infrastructure improvements for water supply in the disadvantaged community of Weaverville.
Reducing instream diversions enhances overall watershed health, especially during hot summer months.
Water conservation projects and education enhance community climate resiliency. More instream water during summer months enhances watershed and salmonid population climate resiliency.
